The Epson SX400 is the DX8400 replacement it on first impression is difficult to see what’s changed. It apparently improvement have been made to the paper trays both front an rear and the SX400 is a new colour, which looks a lot like the old DX8400 dark gray. The lack of changes is not a problem however because the DX8400 was a good multifunction printer and if the SX400 shares the same DNA then it should also be good. Print quality is above the average for a printer in this price bracket and the quality of output ranges from pages of text right through to borderless photo prints. This high standard of print quality is thanks to the SX400’s high resolution print head which is capable of a maximum 5760dpi x 1440dpi resolution and the four colour ink system which not only produces great quality but is also economical as it uses four singular ink cartridges which is good because it means if only one colour runs out you only need to replace that one colour and the remaining ink of other colours is unaffected and doesn’t get wasted.

The cost of the Epson SX400 ink cartridges is not quiet so economical at over £30 for a complete set, but compared to it competitors the SX400 is reasonable in terms of its Epson inks. If this seems too expensive there are cheaper alternatives available for the SX400 in the form of compatible printer ink cartridges which cost half the price of the genuine OEM inks. The SX400 offers more than just print though it also has an A4 flat bed scanner which it also makes use a photocopier as well as a scanner. The scanner comes with software for photo editing and OCR text recognition for coverts print text documents into computer files that can be edited in programs such as word. The photo copier works without the need for a PC and produced great quality copies at an adequate speed. The memory card slot of LCD screen enables another PC-free function which is direct photo printing from a memory card or digital camera via the PictBridge connection.
